K Sri and SKR

by S.V. Mani

Dr. Krishna Srinivas was a veteran poet popularly known as “KSRI,” and a Padmashri awardee of the Govt. of India; for the families of SRV and SRK he was an outstanding “Personality” with matchless and unparalleled scholarship in the world of Journalism. S.K.R was more and more a ‘Pet’ for him, and on no occasion have I missed the blossom of a smile, affection, a paternal pat, a concern, and care towards SKR which speaks volumes of their relationship, a ‘phenomena’ of high level, never witnessed! I used to recollect (whenever I happened to meet them) Dr. Samuel Johnson, a founder of the English dictionary, and his loyal friend “BOSWELL”, a hero worshiper of Dr. Johnson. Dr. Johnson struggled day and night to publish his “world famous’ English dictionary and for the extraordinary goal, both begged in platforms and streets of London for money for their project. After continued struggle and great efforts Dr. Johnson blossomed as victorious!

In his early days SKR was a staunch devotee of God MURUGA and chose one MOUNA SAMIAR as his patron saint, residing at VALLIMALAI on the outskirts of Madras City. On one occasion I got a very fine chance to go to VALLIMALAI with SKR and KSRI. On reaching the top of the hill there was one cave wherein the MOUNA SAMIAR was seated. Dr. SKR, upon entering, prostrated before the saint continuously for nearly 20 minutes till the MOUNA SAMI poured “VEEBHOTHI” (sacred ash) on his body and touched him to stand up! Myself and KSRI standing nearby were taken by emotion. There was a pooja and other spiritual activities that lasted for several hours. We went through the surrounding hills and enjoyed nature's beauty. Dr. SKR took a small new camera (in those days the Kodak’s brownie 127 – a small camera was famous in the midst of those who can’t go in for the highly priced cameras) and clicked a photo when myself and KSRI were looking at the mountains. A copy of which I considered highly valuable and protected for the last five decades! (See photo below)
